Monday evening saw Runworx hosting their first running workshop, to great success. Read on to find out more...
The evening started with Eugene giving some key advice for anyone starting regular running. This included tips on finding a good training partner or club to join in order to enjoy the training more, as well as good advice on clothing, footwear and socks that should be considered by any person who want to make running a more regular part of their lives. He talked briefly about what to expect on the day of a race and provided some tips on preparation for the day, particularly on the morning of the race when things can sometimes be left to last minute.
Mark then took over, and as the new Runworx physio he outlined key areas that can lead to injuries in runners and ways in which to avoid these problems. He gave valuable advice and handouts on ways to look after your body before, during and after training. This included ways to ensure you took onboard the right fluids and foods around training and racing, and advice on how best to approach using strength exercises to avoid overuse injuries.
Joe was the last to talk, and spent some time talking about training smart, as well as outlining key problems that are increasingly common in training programmes. This mainly included the concept that not enough people include high intensity training in their plans, and that this was the single most effective way of increasing your fitness and race speed. He then discussed the idea of periodised training, outlining ways to increase the training load while also giving the body time to recover.
The session then went to a questions and answers forum that went on for a full hour and provided a depth of information on many different aspects of training as well an insight into the training Mark used leading up to his 8th place finish at the European Cross country championships last year. There was also an interesting discussion about barefoot running and the panel spent time outlining some essential marathon training.
Following feedback from the audience we will be hoping to hold several more of these sessions to include: training for the marathon, exercises every runner should use, and body maintenance sessions.
The website mentioned during the talk was www.edge-science.com where some info on running can be found in the articles section. Also, Mapmyruns.com is a usefull website to estimate running distance and time for routes around Ireland.
